Twilight Series: Twilight

By Stephanie Meyer
moz-screenshot.jpg Twilight is the first book of the Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer. The book is written around the life of Bella, the heroin of sorts in this series. Twilight begins when she moves to Forks, Washington. Forks being her"own personal hell on earth",she leads a boring life until she meets the beautiful and mysterious Edward Cullen. She hears rumors that Edward and his family are more than "beautiful humans", but despite having many theories she cannot bring herself to believe that Edward is more than human. As book book dives deeper into how Bella's and Edward's lives intertwined with each other, more is revealed about Edward's past, eventually reaching point when the fact that he is a vampire slips out and the the Cullens were a clan of vampires who swore against drinking human blood. The story continues as other vampires catch scent of her and start the hunt for Bella. Edward and his family desperately try to save her, while the other group of vampires will do anything do hunt her down. It's a game of cat, mouse, and dog, to save Bella's life, or to end it.

By Rick Riordan

The Titan's Curse is the third book in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. Percy, Grover, Annabeth, and Thalia find two newly discovered half-bloods. Ending up trapped between a helicopter and a manticore because of Percy's stupid move, trying to save Bianca and Nico di Angelo by taking on the monster that was kidnapping them. Artemis, the goddess of hunt and the wild, charge in with her group of hunters and save the day. Annabeth disappears with the manticore when it jumped over a cliff. Artemis then leaves and hunts a very dangerous monster. Artemis is then captured and the oracle at Camp Half-Blood, foretells that Artemis must be rescued and two of the five people will die. Percy, Thalia, Grover, Bianca, and Zoe (a hunter) go around USA, looking for Artemis and Annabeth.
This book is great! It makes me want to read more from this series and I can't wait to get the fourth book in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, The Battle of the Labyrinth. I think that's what it's called... I would rate this book 10/10!!! I suggest you to read the first two books because it is a bit hard to understand if you start on the third book...

Odds Are Good

Author: Bruce Coville

external image 51CH5WPA3WL._BO2,204,203,200_PIsitb-dp-500-arrow,TopRight,45,-64_OU01_AA240_SH20_.jpgThe book Odds Are Good by Bruce Coville is a collection of short stories. On a whole I think all the short stories are good but I have a few favourites that I like more than the other stories. "Am I Blue?", "I, Earthling", "The Giants Tooth", and "The Japanese Mirror" are my favourites out of all of these short stories. Overall I would give this book a 5 out of 5 stars because all the stories are entertaining and enjoyable even though all the stories are fantasy, but they all are a different type of fantasy.

The Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan

This story is about Percy Jackson in his second adventure to the Sea of Monsters. It all started when a game of dodge ball against some new students, becomes a death match against a group of cannibal giants. As Percy’s companion Annabeth arrives to help him escape, Percy races back to camp, to find himself in the middle of a war. Thalia’s tree, a magical protection for Camp Half Blood has been poisoned and a cure must be found in order to stop monsters from invading the camp. Percy sets off to the sea of monsters to rescue Grover from Polyphemus’ grasp, and to bring back the Fleece in hope of curing Thalia’s tree.
The author sets “traps” for the heroes to wonder into along their quest. One that includes a spa and resort, and another which is a monster donut shop. Monsters, evil gods and goddesses are usually hidden and disguised as helpers. Some which the author reveals bit by bit throughout chapters of the book. The book’s climax was when Percy, and his other hero companions were being chased by the cyclops Polyphemus. This part of the book was probably the longest and it seemed to appear more graphic. Few unexpected arrivals were also common in the climax, which further enhanced the cyclops wrath. Overall, I recommend this book for those interested in Greek mythology and its presence in the modern world.

Mossflower by Brian Jacques, Illustrated by Gary Chalk
external image jacques_mossflower.JPG
This story is about a country called Mossflower, which ruler becomes the evil cat Tsarmina, Queen of the thousand eyes. The woodlanders of Mossflower woods are being forced to pay tribute, and are determined to rebel. Martin, a brave warrior mouse, and his companions Dinny the mole, and Gonff the mouse thief quest to Salamandastron to search for Boar, the fighter, in hope of putting an end to Tsarmina’s rule.
The book ended with the woodlanders winning the war against Tsarmina, and they even managed to sink her fortress Kotir. It was clever how the moles thought of sinking the floodgates and letting pouring water pile up through the opening. The book is based on medieval times, with a heavy medieval accent for each character. Comparing this book to other Redwall books I’ve read, this one is very similar to others. For example, in most Redwall books, there is usually a hero who leads an army to drive an enemy away from their land.
The author uses descriptive words to explore different scenes throughout the story. For example at the last battle between Martin and Tsarmina:”Tsarmina gave a scream of rage, and dived straight upon Martin. Digging claws into his back, she gave a mad yell of triumph, which was swiftly followed by a howl of pain as the keen blade slashed her ribs to bone……The Wildcat Queen screamed in agony , rounding suddenly on him. Paw grasped claw, teeth bit fur; over and over on the bank in a shower of flying earth.” From these words, I thought of Tsarmina Pouncing onto Martin and digging her claws on his back, while Martin uses his sword to slash back. From the second scene, I pictured both combatants rolling down a hill and constantly slashing and biting at each other.
